Uneven road

What does this sign mean?

The sign warns that the surface ahead is rough, rutted or badly broken up. It is used on roads damaged by frost, subsidence or heavy traffic, and around long-term repairs where the surface has never been fully reinstated. Slow down, hold the steering firmly and avoid sudden braking or swerving on the poor surface, which affects grip and can unsettle the vehicle. Motorcyclists are especially at risk here, and the theory test often frames uneven surfaces as a hazard to riders rather than only to cars.
