Traffic signals not in use

What does this sign mean?

This sign tells you that the traffic lights at the junction ahead have been switched off or have failed, so nobody has priority from the signals. It appears at signal-controlled junctions during faults, power cuts or roadworks, and is often used with temporary signs or a police officer directing traffic. Treat the junction as an uncontrolled one: approach slowly, make eye contact where you can, and give way rather than assume your way is clear. Test questions use it to check that you do not rely on a dark signal head meaning the road ahead is empty.
