Road narrows on right

Road narrows on right (left if symbol reversed)

What does this sign mean?

The road ahead loses width on one side only, and the symbol shows which side: as drawn here the narrowing is on the right, and the mirrored version warns of a narrowing on the left. It commonly appears where a lane is lost, where a bridge parapet or building crowds the carriageway, or where a rural road tapers after a widened section. Check your mirrors, hold back from the vehicle in front and be ready to give way rather than squeeze through alongside oncoming traffic. Candidates are regularly asked to tell this apart from the sign that warns of a narrowing on both sides, so read which side of the triangle is straight.
