Warning signs

Level crossing without barrier or gate ahead

What does this sign mean?

A railway crosses the road ahead and there is no barrier or gate to physically stop you. The crossing may be protected by flashing red lights and an audible warning, or it may be an open crossing with nothing more than a give way sign. Slow down as you approach, obey any signals, and never start to cross unless the road beyond the rails is clear enough for your whole vehicle. Level crossing questions are a staple of the theory test, and the key rule is that you must never stop on the crossing itself.
