Warning signs
Soft verges
What does this sign mean?
This sign warns that the ground at the edge of the carriageway will not support a vehicle. You will meet it on narrow rural roads where drivers are tempted to pull onto the verge to pass an oncoming vehicle or to park. Keep your wheels on the made-up surface, and if you must let something past, wait at a firm passing place instead of easing onto the grass. Getting stuck or dropping a wheel into a soft verge can pull the vehicle off the road entirely, which is the hazard the theory test wants you to recognise.
