Warning signs

Opening or swing bridge ahead

What does this sign mean?

The bridge ahead opens or swings aside to let boats through, so the road can be closed without warning. It is found at canals, rivers and harbours, and closures are usually controlled by barriers and signals. Approach at a speed that lets you stop, obey any signals or attendant, and wait clear of the bridge deck until it has closed and locked. The metal deck can also be slippery when wet, which is a detail theory test questions sometimes pick up on.
