Level crossing without barrier

Warning signs

Level crossing without barrier

What does this sign mean?

This sign marks a railway crossing that has no barrier or gate at all, usually accompanied by a give way sign or a stop sign at the rails. Crossings like these are found on minor roads and farm accesses, where drivers must judge for themselves whether it is safe. Stop or give way as instructed, look and listen along the line in both directions, and cross only when you can clear the far side completely. The theory test focuses on the fact that no barrier means no physical protection, so the responsibility is entirely yours.
