Traffic merging from the left ahead

Traffic merging from left ahead

What does this sign mean?

Traffic joins your road from the left further on, typically from a slip road or a side road that runs into the main carriageway. Neither stream has an automatic right to force its way in, so the merge relies on drivers adjusting speed and leaving gaps. Check your mirrors, be ready to ease off or move over safely, and let joining traffic slot in rather than blocking it out. Merging in turn is the behaviour the Highway Code recommends, and test questions on lane discipline expect that answer.
