Warning signs
Risk of ice
What does this sign mean?
The snowflake symbol warns that the road ahead is prone to icy conditions. It is used on exposed stretches, shaded lanes, bridges and hill routes where frost lingers long after the surrounding roads have cleared. Reduce your speed gently, use the highest suitable gear, and steer and brake as smoothly as you can, because ice can multiply your stopping distance many times over. Theory test questions link this sign to the classic figure that stopping distances on ice can be ten times those on a dry road.
