Steep hill upwards

What does this sign mean?

The gradient shown on the sign warns of a steep climb ahead, with the percentage giving its severity. You will meet it on hilly rural roads and mountain routes, where heavily laden lorries and towing vehicles slow to a crawl. Select a lower gear before the gradient bites so the engine keeps pulling, and be prepared for very slow vehicles ahead and impatient overtaking behind. Theory test candidates are expected to know the difference between this and the downhill sign, which is the one that affects your braking rather than your gear choice.
