Distance to ‘STOP’ line ahead

Warning signs

Distance to stop line ahead

What does this sign mean?

This triangular sign warns that a junction controlled by a STOP sign is coming up, and the distance shown tells you how far away the stop line is. You will usually meet it on a rural road or a fast approach where the junction itself is hidden by a bend, a hedge or a rise in the road. Ease off the accelerator as soon as you see it, because you must come to a complete standstill at the line whether or not anything is coming. Theory test questions often pair this sign with the octagonal STOP sign to check that you know a warning of a stop line is not the same as the order to stop.
