What does this sign mean?

The exclamation mark is the general-purpose warning sign, used where no specific symbol exists, and a plate beneath it names the hazard. You will see it in front of temporary or unusual dangers, from surface damage to events on the road. Read the plate as you approach, because the sign alone tells you only that something needs your attention. Theory test questions use it to check you know the sign has no fixed meaning of its own and that the plate carries the detail.
