Warning signs
Slippery road
What does this sign mean?
The car with skid marks behind it warns that the road surface ahead may offer poor grip. It is used where a surface is known to become slippery in the wet, on steep or polished sections, and near sites where mud or spillage is common. Reduce your speed gently before the affected stretch, avoid harsh braking or sudden steering, and leave a much bigger gap to the vehicle in front. It appears often in theory test questions about stopping distances, which can be ten times longer on ice and roughly double in the wet.
