Warning signs

Falling or fallen rocks

What does this sign mean?

This sign warns that rocks may fall onto the road or already lie on the carriageway. It is used on routes cut into hillsides, through quarried cuttings and along coastal roads, and the risk rises after heavy rain or a hard frost. Reduce speed, watch the surface ahead for debris and keep away from the base of the rock face where you safely can. Test questions treat fallen debris as an unexpected obstruction, where controlled braking beats a sudden swerve into the other lane.
