Pedestrians in road ahead

What does this sign mean?

The sign warns that people are likely to be walking in the carriageway ahead, usually because there is no footway. It is common on narrow country lanes, on roads leading to villages, and where a pavement ends abruptly. Cut your speed, expect pedestrians to be walking towards you on your side of the road, and give them a wide berth rather than passing close at speed. It is regularly used in theory test questions about vulnerable road users, where the right answer is to slow down and be ready to stop.
