Steep hill downwards

Warning signs

Steep hill downwards

What does this sign mean?

The sign warns of a steep descent ahead, with the percentage showing how severe the gradient is. It appears on hill routes and valley roads, and is often followed by advice for lorries or an escape lane. Choose a low gear before the descent so engine braking helps hold your speed, and never coast in neutral or with the clutch down, which robs you of control just where you need it. Downhill gradients also lengthen your stopping distance, a point theory test questions raise alongside towing and heavy loads.
