Low-flying aircraft or sudden aircraft noise

What does this sign mean?

This sign warns that aircraft cross low over the road, or that sudden aircraft noise may startle you. It is placed near the ends of runways and around military airfields, where a jet passing overhead can be both loud and visually alarming. Keep your attention on the road, expect the noise and do not brake sharply or look up at the aircraft. It is one of a small group of signs candidates find memorable but easy to misread, so look for the aeroplane silhouette rather than assuming it means an airport ahead.
