Available width of headroom

Available width of headroom indicated

What does this sign mean?

This sign shows the headroom available under an arch or bridge, together with the width over which that clearance applies. It is used at arched bridges where the highest point is in the middle and clearance falls away towards the edges. Drivers of tall vehicles must know their loaded height and take the marked line through the arch rather than the nearest lane. Bridge strikes are a serious and expensive incident, so height and width signs feature strongly in the lorry and bus theory tests.
