Parking restricted to permit holders

What does this sign mean?

Only vehicles displaying the permit named on the sign may park in the bays it covers, and the plate gives the permit type and the hours of operation. Schemes like these protect residents' parking in busy urban areas and around stations and hospitals. Read the times carefully, because outside the stated hours the bays may be open to anyone. Parking control questions in the theory test usually turn on reading the plate rather than the sign face.
