No entry for vehicular traffic

What does this sign mean?

The white bar in a red circle means no entry for vehicles, and it is most often placed at the exit end of a one-way street. Driving past it puts you head-on into oncoming traffic, which is why it is one of the most serious signs to miss. If you see it, do not enter; find another route even if it means going a long way round. Recognising it instantly, and knowing it usually indicates one-way traffic coming towards you, is essential theory test knowledge.
