Give way to traffic on major road

What does this sign mean?

The inverted triangle tells you to give way to traffic on the road you are joining, and it is normally backed up by a broken white give way line across your lane. You do not have to stop if the road is clear, but you must be able to, and you must not force traffic on the major road to slow or swerve. Approach slowly, look well into the road in both directions, and wait for a gap that is genuinely long enough. Its distinctive shape means it can be recognised even from behind or when covered in snow, a detail worth remembering for the test.
