Manually operated GO sign

Manually operated temporary STOP and GO signs

What does this sign mean?

This is the GO side of a hand-held board used to control traffic through roadworks or an incident, and it means you may proceed when it is safe. You will meet it where a single lane is shared by both directions and an operative controls each end. Move off only when the board is turned to GO and the road ahead is clear, keeping your speed low through the works. The paired STOP and GO boards are a set-piece theory test topic because the operative's instruction must be obeyed just like a traffic signal.

Highway Code references

  • Rule 105 from General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders (103 to 158)
  • Rule 288 from Road works, level crossings and tramways (288 to 307)
