Segregated pedal cycle and pedestrian route

What does this sign mean?

This sign marks a shared route where cyclists and pedestrians each have their own side, divided by a line or a change of surface. It is used on off-road paths, riverside routes and wide pavements converted for cycling. Drivers meet it where such a route crosses or joins the road, and should expect cyclists to arrive at road speed rather than walking pace. The unsegregated version shows the two symbols side by side without a dividing line, and the theory test does ask you to tell them apart.

Highway Code references

  • Rule 140 from General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders (103 to 158)
