Entry to 20 mph zone

What does this sign mean?

This sign marks the start of a 20 mph zone, where the lower limit applies to every road inside the zone until you see the end sign. Zones like these are used in residential streets, around schools and in town centres, and they normally include traffic calming features such as humps or narrowings. Keep to 20 mph throughout rather than speeding up between the calming measures, and expect pedestrians and children close to the carriageway. Candidates are often asked to tell a zone entry sign from a plain speed limit sign: the zone applies to a whole area, not just the road you are on.
