Signs giving orders
Stop and give way
What does this sign mean?
The octagonal STOP sign requires you to stop completely at the solid white line, whatever the traffic conditions, and then give way before joining the major road. It is used where visibility is so poor that a rolling approach would be unsafe. Come to a standstill behind the line, take a proper look in both directions, and move off only when you are sure it is clear. Its unique eight-sided shape means it can be identified when snow or grime hides the wording, which is a favourite theory test detail.
