Edge line

What does this road marking mean?

A continuous white line along the nearside marking the edge of the running carriageway. It shows you where the usable road ends, which matters most at night, in fog and on unlit rural roads where the verge is hard to make out. Following it gives you a reliable reference for your position when visibility is poor. Where it is broken rather than solid, there is usually a side road, layby or access point.
