What does this road marking mean?

Painted areas that separate streams of traffic or protect vehicles waiting to turn right. If the area is bounded by a broken line you should not enter it unless it is necessary and you can see it is safe. If it is bounded by a solid line you must not enter it except in an emergency. Chevrons pointing against your direction of travel indicate a stream of traffic that will shortly be merging or diverging.
