What does this road marking mean?

A broken white line marking the middle of the road, which you may cross if the way ahead is clear. The length of the painted sections is the information: as a hazard approaches the paint gets longer and the gaps shorter. That change is a warning in itself, and it is worth reading before you commit to an overtake. Where the line stays short and evenly spaced, the road ahead is generally straightforward.
