Double white lines

What does this road marking mean?

Where the line closer to you is solid, you must not cross or straddle it. There are narrow exceptions: you may cross to enter premises or a side road, to pass a stationary vehicle, or to pass a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle travelling at 10 mph or less. Outside those cases the line is a legal prohibition rather than advice. It is used where the view ahead is too short for overtaking to be safe at any speed.
