What does this road marking mean?

A yellow bay marked BUS STOP on the carriageway, reserving the space so that buses can pull in level with the kerb. Parking in it forces the bus to stop in the running lane, which blocks traffic and makes passengers step into the road. Passengers boarding and alighting here are one of the commonest sources of pedestrians emerging from behind a large vehicle. Approach a stop expecting people to cross in front of or behind the bus.
