Primary route ring road sign

Primary route forming part of a ring road

What does this sign mean?

This green sign uses the ring road symbol to direct through traffic around a town rather than into it. It is placed on the approaches to urban areas, where following the ring is usually faster and avoids narrow central streets. Pick up the symbol early and keep following it, since ring roads are signed as a continuous route rather than by destination. Being able to read a symbol rather than a place name is a small but genuinely useful sign skill the test checks.
