Direction signs
Motorway sign at a junction leading to a motorway
At a junction leading directly into a motorway (junction number may be shown on a black background)
What does this sign mean?
A blue sign at the junction itself shows where the road leading directly onto a motorway begins, and the junction number may be shown on a black patch. It is placed at the decision point, so this is the last chance to change your mind about joining. Choose your lane well before you reach it and be sure your vehicle is allowed on a motorway, because learner drivers without an approved instructor, cyclists and slow vehicles are not. Blue means motorway throughout the sign system, and the theory test uses that colour rule constantly.
