Direction signs
Emergency diversion route symbol: circle
Symbols showing emergency diversion route for motorway and other main road traffic
What does this sign mean?
The black circle is one of the four emergency diversion symbols used when a main road or motorway has to be closed. When you are diverted, note which symbol appears on the sign at the exit and follow only that one until you rejoin your original road. Mixing symbols will take you onto a different diversion entirely. Knowing that these small shapes indicate a diversion route, rather than a route number or a hazard, is what the theory test is checking.
