Emergency diversion route symbol: square

Symbols showing emergency diversion route for motorway and other main road traffic

What does this sign mean?

The black square is one of four symbols used to mark emergency diversion routes when a motorway or trunk road is closed. Note the symbol shown where you are diverted off and follow it consistently until it returns you to your original route. The symbols are deliberately plain so they can be added to existing signs quickly during an incident. The theory test asks about them because most drivers pass hundreds of these small patches without ever noticing them.
