Emergency diversion route symbol: triangle

Symbols showing emergency diversion route for motorway and other main road traffic

What does this sign mean?

A small black triangle on a yellow patch is one of four symbols used to mark an emergency diversion route when a motorway or main road is closed. Follow the symbol given on the signs at the point where you leave the closed road, and keep following that same symbol until it brings you back. Do not switch between symbols, because each one traces a different route. The four shapes, a triangle, circle, square and diamond, are a neat theory test question precisely because they look so unremarkable.
