Information signs
Variable speed limit with camera enforcement
Variable speed limit with camera enforcement sign.
What does this road sign mean?
A sign showing that the speed limit on this stretch changes according to conditions and that cameras enforce it. Variable limits are used on smart motorways and some urban routes to smooth traffic flow before congestion builds. A limit displayed inside a red circle is legally binding, so the figure showing when you pass the sign is the limit that applies to you. Because the figure can change between gantries, the limit you saw a mile back may no longer be in force.
