Lane designated for high occupancy vehicles

Lane designated for use by high occupancy vehicles (HOV) - see rule 142

What does this sign mean?

A high occupancy vehicle lane is reserved for vehicles carrying at least the number of people shown on the sign, with the aim of rewarding car sharing. The restriction may apply at all times or only during the hours given on a plate. Do not use the lane unless your vehicle meets the stated occupancy, and check whether motorcycles, buses or taxis are also permitted. Designated vehicle lanes and the times they operate are set out in the Highway Code and turn up regularly in theory test questions.
