Entrance to congestion charging zone

What does this sign mean?

This sign marks the boundary of a congestion charging zone, where a charge is payable for driving within the zone during the hours of operation. The best-known example is in central London, and similar schemes and clean air zones operate in other cities. Check whether your vehicle is chargeable and pay by the deadline set by the scheme, because enforcement is automatic and by camera. Charging and emissions zones are increasingly common, so recognising the entry sign is useful well beyond the theory test.
