Additional traffic joining from the left ahead

Additional traffic joining from left ahead. Traffic on main carriageway has priority over joining traffic from right hand lane of slip road

What does this sign mean?

This sign warns that another stream of traffic joins from the left, and it also makes clear who has priority: vehicles already on the main carriageway keep it, and drivers arriving on the outer lane of the slip road must give way to them. It is used at busy motorway and dual carriageway entries where two lanes of joining traffic have to be resolved. Keep a steady speed, leave room for joining vehicles and avoid braking sharply in the left-hand lane. Priority at merges is one of the details the theory test picks apart, so read the diagram rather than assuming.
