Light signals controlling traffic
Green traffic light
GREEN lets you proceed when the road beyond is clear. Give way to anyone already crossing when you turn.
What does this light signal mean?
Green permits you to proceed when the road beyond is clear, which makes it a permission rather than an instruction. Never enter a junction you have no room to leave, however long you have been waiting. Turning movements deserve particular thought: anyone already crossing keeps their priority, and cyclists may be coming up on your nearside. The signal confers nothing over a road user lawfully in the junction ahead of you.
