What does this light signal mean?
A row of signals mounted above the carriageway, one per lane, showing which lanes are open and which are closed. A green downward arrow means the lane is open to you, a red X means it is closed, and a diagonal white arrow directs you to move into the lane it points towards. Because each signal applies only to the lane beneath it, you have to read the one above your own rather than the row as a whole. They are used on motorways, in tunnels and on tidal-flow roads where lane direction changes through the day.
