Red X lane closure signal

You MUST NOT proceed further in this lane

What does this light signal mean?

A red X above a lane means you must not proceed further in that lane. The lane may be closed because of a collision, a breakdown or people working on the carriageway, and it may be closed some distance before the reason becomes visible. Move out in good time rather than continuing until you can see why. Driving in a lane closed by a red X is enforced by camera on smart motorways.
