Large goods vehicle rear markings
Left - Central - Right
What does this vehicle marking mean?
Reflective yellow and red markings fitted to the rear of large goods vehicles and trailers so that their width and position can be judged in the dark. The pattern differs depending on whether the marking is on the left, the centre or the right of the vehicle, which helps you work out how much of the road it occupies. Seeing only part of the expected pattern usually means the rest is hidden by distance, spray or a bend. Treat them as a cue to hold back rather than to close up.
