I intend to slow down or stop

What does this signal mean?

The arm is extended and moved slowly up and down, palm downward, to show that you intend to slow down or stop. It is the clearest way of warning following traffic when your brake lights alone may not convey how much you are slowing. Riders use it approaching a hazard where braking will be gradual rather than sharp. As with all arm signals, it warns others rather than instructing them.
