Lane restrictions at road works ahead

What does this sign mean?

This sign shows how the lanes ahead are affected by road works, indicating which are open and which are closed. It is used before contraflows and lane closures so drivers can position themselves in good time. Get into the correct lane early, merge in turn where traffic is heavy, and do not use a closing lane to jump the queue at the last moment. Merging in turn at a lane closure is the behaviour the Highway Code recommends and the theory test rewards.

Highway Code references

  • Rule 134 from General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders (103 to 158)
  • Rule 288 from Road works, level crossings and tramways (288 to 307)
