Theory test
How to Book Your Theory Test: Cost, Requirements and Common Mistakes
Published
You book the theory test online through the official GOV.UK service for £23. You need three things: your UK provisional driving licence number, an email address and a credit or debit card. The booking takes a few minutes.
Here's the full picture, including who can book, what support you can request, and the traps that catch people out.
What do you need to book the theory test?
Three things:
- Your UK driving licence number, from your provisional photocard licence
- An email address, for your booking confirmation
- A credit or debit card to pay the £23 fee
You must have a provisional licence before you can book. If you haven't applied for one yet, apply for your provisional licence first.
How much does it cost to book?
The theory test costs £23 for cars and motorcycles, the same price on weekdays, evenings and weekends.
Always book at the official GOV.UK booking service. Unofficial booking websites appear high in search results and charge extra fees for the same appointment, sometimes double. If the site asks for more than £23 for a car theory test, you're on the wrong site.
When can you book your theory test?
You can take the car theory test from your 17th birthday. You can take it from your 16th birthday if you get, or have applied for, the higher weekly rate of the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
There's also a residency condition: you must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before your test day. Northern Ireland runs its own booking system through nidirect.
What support can you request when booking?
Tell DVSA when you book if you have a reading difficulty, health condition or disability. Depending on your needs, you can get:
- The test read aloud through headphones, in English or Welsh
- Extra time for the multiple-choice questions
- Someone to read the screen or record your answers, or reword the questions
Support needs proof, such as a letter from a teacher, doctor or occupational therapist, and it must be arranged at booking, not on the day.
Who doesn't need to take a theory test?
You don't need a theory test to upgrade an automatic car licence to a manual one, to move from A1 to A2 motorcycle after two years, or for certain lorry and minibus category upgrades. For a first full car licence, though, there's no way around it: theory test first, then the practical.
What happens after you book?
You'll get an email confirmation with your test date, time and centre. On the day, bring your provisional photocard licence and arrive 15 minutes early. Your pass certificate then lasts 2 years, so book the theory test when you're ready to start driving lessons seriously, not years ahead.
Between booking and test day is where passing is decided. Drivingo gives you every official practice question with explanations, hazard perception practice, and mock tests that tell you when you're genuinely ready rather than hopeful. Download Drivingo and walk in prepared.
